Douglas Keliiheleua Kleinsmith is a freelance artist based out of Davis, CA.
He currently works as a freelance muralist, and exhibits his paintings throughout the West Coast.
His personal work explores process art, investigating trans-humanism, visual perception, and the connection between the creative process and consciousness. Reminiscent of art therapy and its intention to develop emotional intelligence, Douglas uses art as a means to explore the self and through his own filter, attempts to help others do the same.
"Creating for me has increasingly become less about the product, and more about the process. I never know what a painting will look like until it is completed. This is exactly why I continue to paint. The thrill of watching something unfold engages me, and the line between action and experience has become increasingly blurry.
My approach to painting focuses on the separation of conscious and unconscious decisions, utilizing and examining the interplay between the two in order to create visual imagery.. Randomness is created using automatic drawing or natural/fluid effects with paint, and then interpreted and given intention and structure. In this way, the paintings reference the fickle and subjective reality we all inhabit, formed from the combination of our limited sensory experiences and our emotional interpretations."
